Microneedling (aka collagen induction therapy) is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that involves the use of several fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries to the dermis (second layer) of the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, two building blocks that enhance the health and appearance of your skin. Easily combined with other skin treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help reduce stretch marks, scars, and pores. We proudly use the Eclipse MicroPen depending on your skin’s unique microneedling needs. If you are looking for more skin tightening in addition to collagen stimulation, radiofrequency microneedling is a newer, more aggressive treatment, but still with minimal downtime.
Ideal Candidate
This is suitable for most skin tones and types, especially if you:
- Have rough skin texture or low elasticity
- Want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Want to reduce acne or sun-damaged scars
- Want to reduce stretch marks
- Want to improve skin tone and texture
- Want to reduce sun damage on your hands
- Are not pregnant or using certain acne medication
Procedure Technique
Microneedling is performed in a private treatment room for about 20 minutes. Numbing cream or a local anesthesia can be requested, but most patients feel only mild to no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the microneedling handpiece is gently and evenly passed over your treatment areas to create the micro-injuries. As part of the microneedling procedure, a topical treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum, will be applied. The treatment will create tiny holes to allow for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in, along with sunscreen, since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.
What to Expect
You may have some swelling and redness for about a day, but this should subside quickly on its own. It may take about 1 – 2 months before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your skin, as the collagen and elastin levels need time to increase. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and lasting skin health. You should be willing to wait a few months before seeing the final results of your microneedling treatment, because the collagen and elastin will need time to regenerate and have a visible effect on the skin.
