Physical therapists play a vital role in wellness by helping to bridge the gap between preventing injury and disability. The advantage of having a physical therapist who is also an ergonomic specialist on our team is validating the saying that, one size does not fit all. What works for a tall person may not work for someone short, what works for an athlete may not apply to a couch potato. Whatever the body size, shape and personal limitations, the goal of ergonomics is to evaluate the total human being, both mental and physical, then apply sound principles to each individual's needs. Whether you're in the kitchen, working heavy machinery or sitting at a desk, the practice of good ergonomics will provide health benefits now and in the long run helping you feel more invigorated, comfortable and productive.
Combining the knowledge of ergonomics with restorative therapy has had a profound effect on clients who are looking not only for a proactive way to recover quickly, but also a way to stay healthy and prevent further injuries as we live our best life.
By the way, did you know that a prescription from your primary care physician is no longer required for a consultation with a physical therapist? So feel free to make a date with our therapist today.

An orthopaedic evaluation includes a comprehensive review of your medical history/present symptoms and a musculoskeletal evaluation (an assessment of your movement patterns, strength, flexibility, range of motion and other specific tests depending on the area of injury). Each session is one-on-one for an hour with your board certified orthopaedic physical therapist. During the initial evaluation, a comprehensive interview of your medical history will be obtained. This will be followed by a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation, which will assess your movement patterns, strength, flexibility, range of motion, and other specific tests depending on the area of injury. A treatment plan is developed and follow-up appointments are scheduled if needed.

Follow-up treatment sessions may include:

  • Functional training

  • Gait training

  • Instruction in post-surgical care

  • Patient education

  • Training in activities of daily living

  • Therapeutic exercise

  • Taping

  • Neuromuscular re-education

  • Ergonomic assessment

  • Manual therapy

Postpartum Preventative Health Assessments

Various medical and musculoskeletal conditions can be prevented postpartum. Conditions, such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and diastasis recti, are often the result of muscle imbalances and weakness.

Postpartum preventative health assessment will include the following:

  • Postural assessment

  • Muscle strength testing

  • Flexibility assessment

  • Ergonomic assessment

  • Optional pelvic floor examination

  • Patient education

  • Instruction in a personalized exercise program

Preventative Health Screenings

Various musculoskeletal conditions and injuries can be prevented. Such injuries are often the result of muscle imbalances. Detection and subsequent correction of these muscle imbalances can significantly reduce potential injury. Regardless of your activity level, a thorough musculoskeletal evaluation is vital to enhance your performance and avoid injury. For example, the most sedentary individuals are prone to musculoskeletal pain due to prolonged sustained postures, which causes certain muscles to become shortened and/or weakened.

Screenings include:

  • Postural assessment

  • Muscle strength testing

  • Flexibility assessment

  • Ergonomic assessment

  • Patient education

  • Instruction in a personalized exercise program

Office Ergonomic Assessments

Many medical conditions, such as back and neck pain, headaches, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel, can arise from faulty set-up of your workstation. Repetitive motions at your workstation can cause microtrama to tissues, resulting in inflammation and pain. To eliminate such causes of pain, our physical therapist offers in-office ergonomic evaluations. Ergonomics is the science of adapting your environment for you to perform a specific task. The goal of ergonomics is to maximize your efficiency and safety in your work environment.

Your ergonomic assessment will include a comprehensive evaluation of your current workstation. Recommendations will be given regarding the following:

  • Desk
  • Chair
  • Computer
  • Telephone (including mobile phone suggestions)
  • Adaptive equipment (i.e. wrist braces, lumbar support, etc)
